I enjoy jumping back and forth between the micro and macro view of the land we live on. My micro view can be seen in these bodies/installations of work: Remnants I was created in early 2011, which documents the decaying greenhouses on Vashon Island. Remnants I was presented at the Blue Heron Art Gallery on Vashon Island in March 2011 and at VERMILLION Gallery on Capitol Hill in Seattle in June 2011. Remnants II was created in July and the first days of August 2011 and was exhibited at VALISE gallery on Vashon Island during the month of August.

In 2011, I lived and worked on Vashon Island, which is a flourishing microcosm of farms that produce fruits and vegetables, among other crops, for the locals and beyond. Over a dozen self-serve farmstands dot the island and are open throughout the year. This is a continuation of a rich farming history on Vashon, including the Beall Greenhouses, which up until the 1970’s was the nation’s largest grower of roses and also had an orchid establishment of world renown. Those greenhouses have since been abandoned and are being reclaimed by nature. The 25 acres of deteriorating structures are in such a state, that their skeletal remains can hardly be seen from the road when the vegetation is at its thickest. I am fascinated and fully support mother nature’s reclamation. The Beall Greenhouses inspired me to explore the various greenhouses on Vashon and to create this body of work.

As an artist, photography is my medium of choice. For the past several years I have been photographing our manipulated landscape from the sky and I am now turning the camera around and pointing it at the sky. What is in between is what you see in this body of work, the series entitled Remnants I, which documents the abandoned greenhouses on Vashon Island.

One of the things that fascinated me the most when shooting my aerial photographs was the perfect grids on the land made by industrial agriculture. I see a lot of similarity in my current greenhouse series to those agricultural grids of my aerial series.
