Spilling Over

In June 2010, I presented one of my Ecotone installations entitled Spilling Over at VALISE gallery on Vashon Island. My statement about the show was as follows: “As I watch the events unfold in the Gulf of Mexico, I am horrified and also motivated to take action. Besides making better daily decisions, the primary action I can take is to make artwork about it and hope that my work will inspire conversation and action in others. I’d like to see positive change come from yet another negative event. This spill is one tiny by-product of our consumptive lifestyle.”

“I have been creating Ecotone Installations for the past year and Spilling Over is my latest piece. I use a variety of aerial photographs I have taken on commercial flights over the past five years. My manipulation of the gallery space, through the choreographed display of photographs and lines, represents human’s manipulation of the land coupled with the fact that everything is connected. Our actions on the land in one place will affect ecosystems in another place. This fact is often forgotten in the decision making process.” Heather Joy, June 2010
